What is nature worth? Rolling farmlands, lush river basins, and rugged forested ridgelines are the backdrop to our lives here in Berks County. But did you know, these natural spaces are working behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to filter our water, clean our air, control flooding, and sustain wildlife? Moreover, natural areas and open space contribute significantly to the local economy through avenues such as outdoor recreation revenue, healthcare savings, and property value premiums.
In 2024, Greener Planning published the Return on the Environment Report, which estimates the economic benefits of these services for Berks County, and created three unique, online mapping tools to help local decision-makers, community scientists, and conservation-minded residents identify and visualize our most valuable and sensitive landscapes.
Take a tour of these innovative planning tools with Berks Nature's VP for Land and Conservation, Andy Fetterman in this workshop to better understand nature's worth.
